For the last 4 weeks, I’ve had the pleasure of training Dewald Senekal, South African rugby professional at RFC Toulon in France.
You can see what Dewald thought of the 4 weeks and see some clips of me training with him….hard!
There was a lot more to the training than is seen in the video including heavy strength training in the gym, sprint and acceleration work on the track and some rehab work but it will show you the kind of intensity required to get results fast.
Dewald walked away with a leaner, stronger, more muscular and more powerful body much better positioned to handle the brutality of professional rugby.
On top of this D’s 20m, 30m and 40m sprint times came down on an average of 8-10%. That can be the difference that changes a game!
I walked away with the following lessons (which I knew already but it’s always good to get confirmation!):
- If a 120kg muscular rugby player can thrive on a nutrition plan MUCH lower in protein than is typical, then guys who do a few bicep curls and some tricep extensions a few times per week and think drinking 4 protein shakes a day and eating the world’s supply of chicken and tuna are required, are well off track.
- Sedentary people who sit down all day really are suffering more from mental programming towards food than ‘hunger’ and a ‘need’ for carbohydrates when a guy training hard twice a day 4 days a week can perform so well not gorging on starchy foods.
- Many joint inflammation issues can be severely improved through nutrition.
- When you have a strong desire to work hard based on crystal clear goal setting and visualization of why you are doing it, you’re results will be exponentially better than those who ‘kind of want to do something sort of but don’t really know what’!
- Knowledge and passion are a potent combination. Take time to find a trainer who can give you both and who’s personality works well with yours.
- Don’t push a prowler with a 120kg Rugby player standing on it….
